June 9, 2004 My Top Ten Sandwiches I was just thinking today about how much I love sandwiches. Ever since it was invented in 1762 by John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, people have come up with a nearly infinite number of variations. Today there are so many kinds of sandwiches out there, you could probably eat a different sandwich every day for years and never have the exact same thing twice. That's incredible! Anyway, I thought I'd take some time today to list what I feel are my top ten favorite sandwiches. Let's go! ;) 10. Egg SaladEgg salad sandwiches are great to eat on picnics, especially on wheat bread with some plain potato chips and a pickle wedge. The only major drawback is that egg salad is rather time-consuming to make. 9. HamThe ham sandwich will always be considered a classic, due to its simplicity as well as its great taste. Anyone can make a ham sandwich in a matter of minutes, and you can even pop it in the microwave for a few seconds to warm it up if you want. It's hard to beat that! 8. BLTAnother sandwich that is fairly easy to make, although you need to fry the bacon, which makes it a little more complicated than the ham sandwich. However, the BLT more than makes up for it in taste and texture. The contrast between the soft bread and crunchy bacon makes this sandwich really stand out. 7. Tuna SaladClosely related to the egg salad sandwich, but easier to make (and better tasting, in my opinion). Best when topped with a fresh lettuce leaf on white bread. 6. Sloppy JoeOne of the messiest sandwiches ever devised, this sandwich had the distinction of being one of the only items on the school lunch menu that didn't suck (along with the tater tots). They still taste great today, especially with a big slice of melted cheese. 5. Grilled CheeseThe minimalist's sandwich. It's beauty is its pure simplicity. Nothing but cheese and bread. While plain cheese on bread would normally be boring, someone got the bright idea to fry it up, bringing it to an entirely new level. Serve with a bowl of hot tomato soup and you're good to go. 4. CheeseburgerArguably the most popular sandwich in America, the cheeseburger is a staple of fast food restaurants, but they can't compare to freshly grilled homemade burgers. A cookout that doesn't have cheeseburgers is a cookout that I won't be attending (unless maybe there's lots of beer). 3. ChickenIt was tough to choose between cheeseburgers and chicken sandwiches, but chicken just barely squeezed by to grab the #3 spot on my list. The problem with grilled chicken sandwiches is that they can be easy to screw up, but when they're made just right, they're better than even the best cheeseburger, especially when served with fresh lettuce, tomato, and honey mustard. Goddamn I'm hungry. 2. PizzaNow I know what you're thinking, "But Meathead, pizza isn't a sandwich!" Technically, this is true. Pizza, in its original form, is not a sandwich. But the fantastic thing about pizza is that it can be turned into a kickass sandwich simply by folding the slice in half, which is how I usually eat it. Hats off to pizza! 1. Philly CheesesteakI had absolutely no trouble picking the #1 sandwich in this list. The Philly cheesesteak is the God of All Sandwiches, and that's really all there is to it. If the inventor of this sandwich is still alive, there had better be people somewhere working around the clock erecting a pyramid to bury him in when he dies. When served fresh and smothered in cheese, sauteed onions, green peppers and mushrooms, the Philly cheesesteak is a creation that is not, under any circumstances, to be fucked with. You simply do not fuck with this sandwich. And that's my list of my Top 10 absolute favorite sandwiches in the whole world. I hope you enjoyed it, and that it inspires you to make a sandwich today, or at least sometime in the near future. Remember, it's never a bad time for a sandwich! See you next time!
